Carrick: Ronaldo at a new level

Manchester United star Michael Carrick has set his sights on securing silverware at Old Trafford and feels Cristiano Ronaldo can spark their push for honours.

The Red Devils are flying high heading into the international hiatus, as they sit at the top of both The Premiership and their UEFA Champions League group.

England star Carrick, who is eager to cement a place under Steve McClaren with The Three Lions, claims he made the summer move from Tottenham to Manchester in order to win silverware.

Victory over Newcastle on Sunday took The Red Devils above Chelsea in the league and Carrick admits is happy with how things are progressing in Manchester.

"It was a huge game, we needed a win," Carrick told Sky Sports News. "We were conscious before the game a win would take us back to the top and we are top of the Champions League and things are going well.

"To pick up a trophy [is the aim]. When you are at United, every competition you enter you want to win. It was a big reason why I came to the club and to do it in my first season would be special."

Ronaldo has won high praise this term and Carrick feels the Portuguese winger could be the man to help him fulfil his dreams.

"Cristiano is on fire, he improving all the time," declared Carrick. "The lads say that compared to last year, he has tightened up his game and is at a new level again.

"It is making my job in the midfield a lot earlier, just giving him the ball and letting him do the rest.

"I am enjoying playing with him."
