A JEALOUS football fan attacked his lover with a baseball bat for eyeing up Cristiano Ronaldo.

Shaun Coleman, 23, hit out after Gemma Marcarian saw the Portuguese ace in the World Cup on TV and cooed: “Who’s he? He’s gorgeous!”

Coleman stormed out in a jealous rage but returned home armed after a three-hour drinking spree, a court heard. Prosecutor Richard Cole said: “He hit her so hard that the wooden bat split in two places. She was struck nine times, leaving injuries to her head, body and legs.”

At the time of the attack, 21-year-old Gemma’s son, five, was sleeping at their home in Cwmbran, South Wales, Newport Crown Court heard.

Coleman, of Porth, Rhondda, got 18 months’ jail after admitting ABH. Gemma said: “I really thought I was going to die.”

Report: Bolton 0 United 4

28/10/2006 16:01, Report by Steve Bartram

A hat-trick from Wayne Rooney and a Cristiano Ronaldo strike gave United an impressive victory at high-flying Bolton Wanderers and sent Sir Alex Ferguson's side back to the top of the Premiership.

Champions Chelsea had topped the table after their earlier win over Sheffield United, but the Reds leapfrogged Jose Mourinho's side by virtue of their superior goal difference.

Rooney struck his first Premiership treble to end a run of 10 games without a goal and Ronaldo tapped in from Louis Saha's pull-back as United romped to victory at the Reebok Stadium.

Predictably, a completely different XI started at the Reebok to that which struggled to a Carling Cup victory over Crewe on Wednesday night. With the big guns back in place, Cristiano Ronaldo's inclusion at the expense of Darren Fletcher was the only change from the side which brushed aside Liverpool last weekend.

And United carried on where they left off against their local rivals, absolutely flying out of the traps against Sam Allardyce's side. Bolton were taken aback by a performance which immediately bristled with intent. Both Ryan Giggs and Rooney were within inches of converting Ronaldo's cross before Patrice Evra saw his shot well saved by Jussi Jaaskelainen.

Rooney and Giggs both threatened again, then Louis Saha saw his impudent chip headed off the line by Abdoulaye Meite as United continued to dominate. A deserved breakthrough came after 10 minutes after a superb, incisive link-up between Rooney and Michael Carrick.
The £14million summer signing curled an exceptional pass over the top of the Bolton defence, and Rooney lashed a left footed effort inside the near post without taking a touch. Eight United games after his last strikes, an opening-day double against Fulham, Rooney had banished all the hype around his goalscoring drought.

With the pressure off, he doubled his tally five minutes later. Gary Neville's right-wing run ended with the ball ricocheting off Tal Ben Haim towards Rooney and the England striker took a touch before passing a beautiful, curling effort past Jaaskelainen from 20 yards.

It was no more than United had deserved for their dominance, and indeed it took 22 minutes for the hosts to register their first attempt on goal.

That effort was a whisker wide as Gary Speed lashed a free-kick just past Edwin van der Sar's left-hand post. It served as a timely reminder of the hosts' capabilities, and also underlined how well United had played to be two goals clear of the Trotters.

Louis Saha then scraped a post with a deflected 25-yard drive and Ryan Giggs had a right-footed shot well parried by Jaaskelainen before the hosts began to impact on the game just before half-time.

Their use of set-pieces and long throw-ins came to the fore in the final three minutes of the half, but United weathered the storm and went in comfortably ahead at the interval.

That comfort zone was well and truly exited after the break, however, as Bolton predictably pushed for a way back into the game and harried the Reds in possession.

United defended superbly, with Nemanja Vidic particularly outstanding at the back, and Bolton's only real opening came as van der Sar saved Campo's close-range effort with his legs.

As the hosts pressed and probed, more and more gaps were subsequently appearing across the pitch. Saha fired straight at Jaaskelainen when he could have wrapped the game up on 73 minutes, but atoned soon afterwards.

The French striker took Carrick's through ball in his stride and drew Jaaskelainen before unselfishly laying the ball across to Ronaldo for a simple tap-in 10 minutes from time.

With the game buried, Rooney added the fairytale finish to a superb United performance by notching his treble in the final minute. Latching on to substitute Fletcher's pass, he clinically lashed the ball past Jaaskelainen to cap an emphatic scoreline.

Before the game, third-placed Bolton hadn't conceded a goal at the Reebok Stadium all season, let alone lost. United's demolition job serves notice of their ambitions and abilities this term.

Bolton Wanderers: Jaaskelainen, Hunt (Pedersen, 85), Faye, Meite, Ben Haim, Campo, Speed, Giannokopolous (Tal, 86), Davies (Smith, 84), Anelka, Diouf.
Subs not used: Walker, Vaz Te.

United: Van der Sar, Neville, Evra (Heinze, 60), Ferdinand, Vidic, Carrick, Scholes, Giggs (Fletcher, 83), Ronaldo, Rooney, Saha (O'Shea, 83).
Subs not used: Kuszczak, Solskjaer.

Goalscorers: Rooney (9, 14 & 90), Ronaldo (81)

Fergie: Ronaldo can be world's best

Friday, 27th October 2006
Stuart Brennan

FULL FLIGHT: Cristiano RonaldoTHE new, improved Cristiano Ronaldo can become the world's best player.

That is the verdict of United boss Sir Alex Ferguson ahead of the Greater Manchester derby showdown with Bolton at the Reebok Stadium.

The 21-year-old Portuguese winger is expected to return to the Reds line-up after missing the win over Liverpool with an ankle injury sustained on international duty.

And manager Sir Alex, never usually too keen to build up his young players, backed up assistant manager Carlos Queiroz's recent claim that Ronaldo could go on to become the world's finest.

"Carlos said a few weeks ago that Cristiano can become the best player in the world - and I actually agree," said Ferguson.

"He has everything and he is learning the game now - when to pass, when to hold. The variety of his game has changed and it's quite remarkable.

"It's something we've been working on with the boy and all of a sudden he is grasping all the things we've been saying and that's very encouraging.

"He has scored something like 16 goals in 40-odd games for Portugal. At 21 years of age that's some record, especially as he is a wide player. That's an amazing statistic and it gives you an indication of where the boy is going.

Speed

"In terms of players who can attack and defend at speed, there is no one like Ronaldo in the world game. No-one comes anywhere near him.

"There are some central midfield players like Kaka and Ronaldinho who will attack from central areas very well. They are world-class players, and Ronaldo is certainly in that bracket now."
Ferguson has offered an invitation to Bolton fans to boo the man England fans love to hate after his supposed role in the dismissal of Wayne Rooney during the World Cup finals in the summer.

Ronaldo has thrived on the extra pressure since returning to Manchester, rising above the abuse and speculation that he is about to quit United and head for Spain.

And Ferguson believes the jeers are a sign of respect and fear for the bewildering skills of a player who has been United's star man in the opening months of the season.

"Although fans in England set out to boo him at the start of the season, in truth they are all sat there with their legs and fingers crossed hoping nothing happens to embarrass their team," said Sir Alex.

"I know English football is very tribal. But there is one common denominator - they are all passionate about the game and they recognise a great player. That is what has happened with Ronaldo.

"At Charlton the other week, I was sitting in the directors' box and this guy was going berserk. Even when Cristiano didn't have the ball he was up on his feet shouting at him. All of a sudden, Ronaldo hits the bar with a great shot and the guy sits down for ten minutes.

"He obviously thought it wasn't worth it because he can hurt you with his ability." Posted by Picasa

Ronaldo back to face Bolton

27/10/2006 10:55, Report by Gemma Thompson

Cristiano Ronaldo is available for United's trip to Bolton having recovered from the illness that prevented him starting against Liverpool last weekend.

The Portuguese winger was only deemed fit enough for a place on the bench because of a flu bug, however, after a week's rest he is ready to make his return against the Trotters on Saturday.

"Ronaldo is back," revealed the United boss at his pre-match press briefing which you can see in full on MUTV Online later this afternoon. "Everyone is fit [apart from Ji-sung Park], but none of the players who played on Wednesday at Crewe will play.

"I'll be relying on the ones who played last Sunday against Liverpool."

The Reds have not lost at Bolton since 1978 and left the Reebok with a 2-1 win last time out. Sir Alex is hoping for a repeat result on Saturday, but fully expects Sam Allardyce's men to put up a brave fight.

"It'll be a tough game," he insisted. "Bolton haven't lost a goal at home this season which is a fantastic record. It reflects the great job that Sam continually does there.

"Sam prepares his team very well for big games and we've experienced some difficult matches over the years. Nevertheless, we're playing well at the moment and I've been very pleased with the consistency and form of the team. That consistency is what we're going to need if we're really going to challenge for the title and hopefully we can keep our run going on Saturday."

In order to do that the Reds will need to a keep close eye on former Arsenal front man Nicolas Anelka, who if fit, could prove to be a tricky customer for United. Sir Alex is fully aware of the threat posed by the French striker and revealed how he once looked at signing the 27-year-old.

"I think anyone would be interested in a player like Anelka and there have been times when I've thought about that," he declared.

"For one reason or another though we didn't do anything about it."
