PREVIEW-Ronaldo and Saha back to fire United

LONDON, Jan 29 (Reuters) - Manchester United are ready to unleash goal-happy Cristiano Ronaldo and Louis Saha when the Premier League leaders take on bottom club Watford on Wednesday.

Last weekend's FA Cup ties mean a midweek programme for the top-flight clubs, plus a League Cup semi-final, second leg between north London enemies Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.

United, with a six-point lead over champions Chelsea, are taking no chances with a Watford side who already look set for a quick return to the second division.


Ronaldo, given a week off to spend in Dubai by manager Alex Ferguson, and Saha, who had a bruised knee, will both be back after missing Saturday's 2-1 FA Cup win over Portsmouth.

Ronaldo has been on sparkling form, scoring seven times in his last seven outings, with the Portuguese winger and the French striker scoring 25 goals between them this season.

Watford could also face Wayne Rooney after the England striker came off the bench to score both goals, including a stunning 20-metre chip shot against Pompey.

Ferguson had planned to rest him but is now re-considering in the hope that Rooney, who also scored in the previous weekend's 2-1 defeat by Arsenal, is on a hot streak.

"If he can get into the scoring form which he did last season and get on a run of scoring single goals, I tell you, he'll make some difference to our team," Ferguson told MUTV.

Chelsea, with 51 points to United's 57, can ill-afford to slip up against a Blackburn Rovers side who have won six of their last eight games on all fronts, including a victory over third-placed Liverpool.

Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho will be hoping captain John Terry makes his long-awaited return from back surgery.

Terry has not played since a win over Newcastle United on Dec. 13 and his absence from central defence has been a big factor behind their recent dip in league form, with three consecutive draws and a 2-0 defeat at Liverpool.

Chelsea, who have missed the spark of injured wingers Joe Cole and Arjen Robben, also need to set aside their problems off the pitch.

Striker Didier Drogba and defender Ashley Cole both said last week that reports of a rift between Mourinho and the board have become a distraction.

They can take some comfort from a couple of easy League Cup and FA Cup wins, over fourth division Wycombe Wanderers and third division Nottingham Forest, along with a 4-0 drubbing of a Wigan Athletic side hovering above the drop zone.

Blackburn should give them much more of a game, though, and a better test of their desire for a hat-trick of titles. Liverpool, with 46 points and a one-point lead over Arsenal, sense a chance to seize second place -- worth a guaranteed Champions League slot -- if Chelsea's bout of the wobbles were to continue.

Rafael Benitez's men have an ideal fixture on Tuesday to keep the pressure on Mourinho's men -- away to relegation battlers West Ham United.

DUBAI — World famous football player, Cristiano Ronaldo, who plays for Manchester United and Portugal, visited Dubai for five days.


The sporting personality, who turns 22 on February 5, praised the emergence of Dubai as an ideal year-round business and leisure destination and various facilities in place and being developed in the emirate.

The Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) organised a thrilling desert safari trip for Mr. Ronaldo in addition to arranging a city tour and presentation on Dubai.

The DTCM Manager Missions, Mr. Hamad bin Mejrin, who accompanied Mr. Ronaldo during the tour, said Dubai has become a popular destination for football players from around the world, especially Europe, for training camps and holidays.

Gill: Ronaldo not for sale

David Gill has echoed Sir Alex Ferguson's sentiments over Cristiano Ronaldo's future, insisting the Portuguese winger is not for sale at any price.

Sir Alex said on Friday there was "no way" the 21-year-old would be leaving Old Trafford following reports linking him with a switch to Real Madrid.

And United's chief executive has reiterated the club's desire to keep hold of one of their most prized assets.

"He is clearly someone we want to stay and we will make sure that he does," explained Gill on BBC Five Live's Sportsweek. "There has been no offer. Ronaldo signed a new contract in 2005 to stay with us until 2010.

"The big clubs may talk in the papers but they fully understand our position. They know we are not a selling club of our prize assets so there is no way that will be sanctioned.

"As I think Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has said on many occasions, football clubs aren't banks - we are there to provide top-class entertainment and put out a top side.

"There is no point having £35m, £40m or £45m if we can't replace that talent. At 21, Ronaldo has had a great season and we believe the best is yet to come."

Gill also insisted that both he and Sir Alex have the full support of the Glazer family regarding Ronaldo's future.

"If I put it [an offer] to them it would be a very short call," declared Gill. "If the manager says 'no sale' then they go along with it without a doubt.

"They are fully in support and they fully understand sport. They want to invest in talent, they don't want to sell our top talent."

Meanwhile, Gill has played down reports that United will secure the services of on loan striker Henrik Larsson on a long term basis - but has not ruled out extending the 35-year-old's temporary stay at Old Trafford.

"Henrik played for Barcelona and went back to Helsingborgs for family and other reasons, so I would have thought that [a long term deal] is extremely unlikely," explained Gill.

"He is due to go back in the middle of March and we haven't really discussed that yet as we are focusing on the next few weeks and we will see what happens.

"I think it is a bit early. You can never say never and we will go through that nearer the time with Henrik and the club," he added.

"I know for a fact Alex, Carlos Queiroz and all the players are very impressed with him in terms of what he can do, his attitude and how he has fitted in and we want great players at the club."

Thierry Henry netted an injury time winner to clinch a dramatic 2-1 win for Arsenal over United at the Emirates Stadium.
The Frenchman headed past Edwin van der Sar in the fourth and final minute of added time following Robin van Persie’s 83rd minute equaliser.

Wayne Rooney had earlier put the visitors in front with a diving header – his ninth of the season - but the Reds were dealt a cruel late blow as the Gunners' stole victory and prevented United from extending their lead over Chelsea.

Sir Alex Ferguson made just one change to the side that overcame Aston Villa in their last league game, bringing in Ryan Giggs to replace Ji-sung Park. The United boss stuck with the front pairing of Wayne Rooney and Henrik Larsson, choosing to leave Louis Saha on the bench.

Arsene Wenger, meanwhile, opted to partner Thierry Henry with Emmanuel Adeboyer, who netted the winner at Old Trafford back in September, at the expense of Robin van Persie who was named on the bench having picked up an ankle knock earlier in the week. Elsewhere, Emmanuel Eboue came in for Justin Hoyte at right-back and Mathieu Flamini replaced the suspended Gilberto Silva in central midfield.

United, who were in search of their first away victory over the Gunners for nearly two years, began the brighter of the two sides and dominated the opening exchanges. Giggs, who started the match up front alongside Larsson with Rooney on the left, struck the visitors’ first effort on goal on 6 minutes after a neat passing move from United. Larsson eventually laid the ball off to Giggs on the edge of the box, but the Welshman curled his shot wide of Jens Lehmann’s right hand post.

Arsenal soon began to find their feet and Thierry Henry tried a speculative effort from distance on 13 minutes. Cutting in from the left wing, he took aim but his shot was straight at Edwin van der Sar.

The temperature inside the Emirates Stadium began to rise soon after following an altercation between Emmanuel Eboue and Wayne Rooney. Referee Steve Bennett, who had booked Kolo Toure seconds earlier for kicking the ball away, stepped in to calm matters. But in truth, his fussiness did not help as he proceeded to book Ryan Giggs and Patrice Evra for rather innocuous challenges.

Having withstood United’s early pressure, Arsenal grew in stature as the half progressed and looked set to open the scoring 12 minutes from the break when the ball fell to Thierry Henry. Fortunately for the Reds, van der Sar dived to his right to grasp the Frenchman’s goalbound header after an excellent cross from Adebayor down the right.

United survived another scare soon after when Henry went down in the area under a challenge from Gary Neville but Steve Bennett, whose view was partially blocked by Adebayor, waved away the Gunners’ appeals for a penalty. Replays showed the Reds’ skipper had made contact with the striker as United fans breathed a sigh relief.

After seeing van der Sar block another Henry effort as half-time approached, United finished the first period as they’d started it – on top. And only some superb goalkeeping from Jens Lehmann prevented them from going ahead. First the German stopper tipped Wayne Rooney’s superb volley over the bar, and from the resulting corner he palmed Larsson’s header away with his outstretched left hand.

Eight minutes into the second period, Wayne Rooney got back to doing what Wayne Rooney does best as he put United in front. After Ronaldo had slipped Patrice Evra in down the left, the full-back's dangerous cross into the box took a nick off Toure before dropping into Rooney’s path allowing the striker to guide a diving header into the net for his first headed goal of his Reds’ career.

As Arsenal went looking for the equaliser, Arsene Wenger introduced Robin van Persie in place of the ineffectual Aleksandr Hleb on 67 minutes. The Reds’ defence continued to stand firm amid constant pressure from the Gunners. Adebayor had three bites of the cherry on 72
minutes when the ball fell to him inside the area but a combination of van der Sar, Ferdinand and Vidic kept the Gunners’ front man at bay.

Seven minutes from time, however, United’s resistance was finally broken. A combination of Fabregas and Rosicky contrived to win possesion on the edge United's box. Henry failed with his attempted flick at Rosicky's right wing cross, but the ball fell to van Persie at the far post who stole in ahead of Gary Neville and blasted it into the roof of van der Sar’s net.

Things got a whole lot worse for the Reds in the last minute of stoppage time when Henry headed home Eboue's excellent cross from the right as the Emirates Stadium erupted.

It’s as you were at the climax of “crunch weekend.” While rueing their missed opportunity to gain a nine point advantage over Chelsea, United know they are still very much in the driving seat at the Premiership summit. All is not lost.
